Code-powered phone hotline · Web Dev Challenge S2.E11

Sponsored by Twilio — watch 3 teams of devs race the clock to build software-powered phone hotlines on Web Dev Challenge. ## The Challenge *Build your very own hotline.* A good hotline connects someone to the thing they need immediately. The Bat Phone is a famous pop culture example, but in real life a hotline can be really useful: - Literally saving lives (e.g. 911, the suicide prevention hotline) - Reporting issues (e.g. local street pothole reporting) - Getting information (e.g. the “call before you dig” hotline) Hotlines can also be completely useless but very fun: - Callin’ Oates: 719-266-2837 - Santa’s Workshop: 951-262-3062 - Better Call Saul hotline: 505–503–4455 They can also be really heartwarming: - Kids Pep Talk Line: 707-873-7862 Your challenge is to come up with your own custom hotline and build it using Twilio’s ConversationRelay. Make it useful or useless. Make it silly or serious. Make it whatever you want! ## The Tool: Twilio ConversationRelay *Your app must use Twilio’s ConversationRelay as part of the build.* ConversationRelay creates a two-way flow between voice and text, making it possible for any voice input to be converted into a text prompt that you can send to any AI backend (or, really, anything you want) and return the response verbally. This means that your hotlines can be interactive. Instead of just playing a message, you can build a hotline that people can speak to — and it will speak back! - Sign up for Twilio: https://twil.io/wdc-signup - Sign in to your Twilio account: https://twil.io/wdc-login - ConversationRelay: https://twil.io/cr - ConversationRelay API docs: https://twil.io/cr-api *THE DEVS* *Team Wolverine* - Jack Herrington @jherr - Sherm Newsom *Team Rocket* - Brian "bdougie" Douglas @bdougie - Pedro Nauck @PedroNauck *Team API-tite* - Avi Seth - Dibyanshu Patnaik *THE ADVISORS* Alex Goldman https://www.linkedin.com/in/agoldman66/ Jason Lengstorf https://jason.energy/links ## The Apps *Team Wolverine (Jack & Sherm) Who's Right hotline source code* https://github.com/jherr/wdc-whos-right *Team Rocket (Brian & Pedro) Pokédex Hotline source code* https://github.com/pedronauck/rocketapp *Team API-tite (Avi & Dibs) Restaurant Recommendations hotline source code* https://github.com/dibyanshupatnaik/conversationrelay-python/tree/feature/review-analysis-workflow ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Get early access to new videos, exclusive bonus content and other perks, and join me in building a happier, healthier, friendlier web dev community! https://codetv.dev/support ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Chapters: 0:00 In this episode... 0:31 Welcome + the challenge 0:40 Required tool + meet your advisor 2:23 Rules of the challenge + planning phase starts 3:05 Meet Team Rocket (Brian & Pedro) + their app idea 4:33 Meet Team Wolverine (Jack & Sherm) + their app idea 5:32 Meet Team API-tite (Avi & Dibs) + their app idea 8:17 Build phase starts 9:45 Progress check ins 15:16 Late stage check ins 19:02 Try the Web Dev Challenge yourself! 19:22 Team Rocket app demo 24:39 Team API-tite app demo 28:03 Team Wolverine app demo 31:49 Reflections on the challenge 34:12 Outtakes and credits
